SHARKS, WHALES & OTHER SEA CREATURES – SUMI INK SKETCHES – Sometimes an artist is asked “How do I find inspiration to paint?”  My first answer is to have a dedicated sacred space to paint and my second answer is to carefully cultivate your inspiration.  Recently I have been painting horses and went to the library to see if they had any horse photo books to inspire my art.  (They didn’t.)  While I was browsing I spotted this book “Draw 50 Sharks, Whales & Other Sea Creatures” by Lee J. Ames with Warren Budd.  I thought the book was fun and set a goal to do paintings of all the sea creatures in the book that I liked.  The due date of the library book was my deadline and of course, I waited to start 4 days before the due date!  I spent about 7 hours over a 3-day period creating these sketches using Japanese brush painting and Sumi ink.  Then I took my Zig calligraphy pen and Micron pen and wrote the marine name and the length of it on the sketches.  I now have a sort of reference chart for any of this marine life I might want to paint and I created a “muscle memory” of painting these creatures because of this project.  Note:  I used to do this when I couldn’t afford to buy a book and really wanted to keep the subject.  Oh, and my final advice to any artist is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.  Creating a project like this does just that.   Just paint.
