SNOWY EGRET – JAPANESE BRUSH PAINTINGS – The snowy egret on the left is a finished painting ready for framing.  The snowy egret on the right side is wrinkled because the painting has not yet been “stretched” a traditional technique to smooth out rice paper paintings, which wrinkle when painted on.  “Stretching” a painting requires the painting to be put on a piece of glass, brushed with a very wet glue mixture, then covered with a backing paper of thicker rice paper and left to dry on the glass for 24 hours.  Sometimes a painting is lost in the stretching process as it is a very delicate technique.
