REMEMBER TO BREATHE I TELL MYSELF. The joy rises up in me. California Brown Pelicans fly by hovering only a few inches above the ocean. A wave breaks, they rise up in unison, an undulation of pelican flight in harmony with the sea. Even high up above me on drafts of air, the pelicans are in breathless, heart-stopping flight. Where are you going my sea creatures of the air? I imagine my feet getting lighter, my body lifting up to take flight with these birds. Can I come with you? Must I live my life of gravity? My feet stay firmly planted on the ground, but my heart is always a bit lighter when pelicans fly by.
