The day has finally arrived. All of the sea gull chick flight school practice will pay off. The flight feathers are beautifully groomed. The longing to fly will soon be a distant memory. All it takes is that first fearless flight off the bluff & the sea gull chicks lives will change forever.
& there it is – the maiden flight up, up & away over the sea. Fly little chick, fly!
Now the chicks can fly down to the sea, which the chicks have only seen from afar.
Their parents’ guide them on the chicks first swim.
& the chicks take their first sea bath.
& they play in the sea pulling up bits of seaweed.
After all they may be able to fly now, but they are still chicks!
They look so handsome floating in the ocean.
They come out from the sea onto the beach.
They dip their toes in the sand for the first time.
They flap their beautiful wings in jubilation.
Victory is sweet for these baby sea gull chicks.
Another nesting season comes to an end. I will keep my eye on these chicks for a while more. They will retain their brown feathers for the first year of their life so even though their polka-dot feathers are long gone, I will be able to recognize these chicks. The chicks will still follow their parents singing “Peep, peep, peep” to be fed, but now that they can fly, they are well on their way to being able to feed themselves. The chicks now are officially part of the seagull community.
I have loved every single minute of this journey of the sea gull chick’s by-the-sea. There is a bitter sweetness that these little ones are mostly grown up now. I will miss their little polka-dotted selves, but I know that next year there is another batch of tiny sea gull chicks just waiting to be born. I hope you have enjoyed this sea gull chick adventure with me!
