BY THE WIND SAILORS (Velella velella) WERE ALL OVER THE BEACH THIS WEEK IN SAN DIEGO. When I went whale watching a few days ago, the Mola Mola Sunfish were eating lots of them. There were also millions of Red Pelagic Crabs swimming in the sea. They look like tiny lobsters! Both of these marine creatures are showing up here now because of warming in the ocean so we don’t get to see them all the time. On the whale watching trip I also saw 2 fin whales come up right next to the boat. Lovely.
I grew up near a river & would go out crabbing with my father at night. It was so beautiful out on the river at night, sometimes under the moonlight. My dad made his rowboat by bending damp wood into a curved shape over a big fire in our backyard. The rowboat had soul. When I paint crabs, I’m remembering crabbing with my father who taught me to love & respect nature.
Here are instructions to make your own art journal, which can be mailed! For this sample I glued used stamps on outside of the envelope. The red address label was created with Martha Stewart Living “rubber” stamps & the tape is Washi tape. The sturdy brown paper was purchased at Home Depot – $10 for 185 yards! This paper is in the paint section and is used to put on the floor during construction or painting. The paper inside the art journal is inexpensive watercolor paper. I draw with a Uniball pen & use watercolors to illustrate my journal. You can glue a mini envelope on the first page & make a tiny gift card for the recipient. If you travel, I think it would be fun to mail it home to yourself from where you were so you could have the stamps & postmark from the country you were in. Have fun!
