MAGICAL FLYING KITTY WEARING A RUSSIAN BALLET DRESS – COLLAGE GREETING CARD

August 18, 2011 WATERMARK

Daily Art Journal for 2011

One summer day in August 2011, my friend Harumi came to make cards with me.  I was inspired by an article I found about vintage Russian ballet costumes & this was the starting point for a day of creating magical cards!  Harumi & I had fun.

Magical Kitty Card - 2 WATERMARK

All it took was some print outs of the Russian ballet dresses, my cat & bird rubber stamps, a few butterflies, some cardstock, some handmade paper & a glue stick!

As the afternoon hours passed, more & more fun ideas starting to arrive!

One of the cards was a bit over the top & obviously couldn’t be mailed in an envelope!

Then my owl rubber stamps were pulled out, more handmade paper & a few silk leaves with ribbons.  Even a bit of moss seemed to work!

One of my favorite cards was hanging the Russian ballet dresses on a clothesline with a cat watching them flying in the wind!

These clothesline cards were so much fun to make.  My fingers couldn’t move fast enough to hang the dresses on the cards!  Even the butterflies joined in.

Don’t forget to decorate the back of your card & envelopes, too!  I ended up added a label to the back of the card explaining about the Russian ballet dresses.     What a fun day with a friend!

SEA SHELLS – MINI WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS – SUNSET CLAM SHELL, OWL LIMPET, COWRY

Sea Shells - mini watercolors 5-27-2014 WATERMARK

PAINTING MINI WATERCOLORS OF SEA SHELLS TODAY.  ALSO A QUICK SHADOW PORTRAIT OF ME WITH THE SEALS!

WHEN I WAS 20-SOMETHING YEARS OLD, I WENT TO SHELL BEACH IN LA JOLLA.  A VERY KIND MAN THERE PICKED UP A FEW SHELLS & TOLD ME THE NAMES OF THEM.  NOW AS A 60-SOMETHING ARTIST BY-THE-SEA, I STOP SHELL COLLECTORS & TELL THEM THE NAMES OF THE SHELLS, TOO.

Seashell mini watercolors 5-27-2014 - 1 WATERMARKTHE TOP SEA SHELL IS A SUNSET CLAM SHELL.  “LIKE EVERY SUNSET, EVERY SUNSET CLAM SHELL IS DIFFERENT.”  & THEY ARE, TOO.  SOME ARE FAINT PINK, SOME ARE DEEP PINK WITH A TINGE OF YELLOW.  THE BOTTOM SHELL IS A TYPE OF SCALLOP SHELL.

THESE ARE COWRY SHELLS.  I WAS TOLD THEY WERE COFFEE-BEAN COWRY SHELLS, BUT HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THEY ARE REALLY CALIFORNIA TRIVIA SHELLS.  THESE SHELLS ARE VERY RARE NOW.

THIS IS A GIANT OWL LIMPET SHELL.  IMAGINE MY SURPRISE & DELIGHT WHEN RESEARCHING THIS SHELL TO BE TOLD IT GETS ITS NAME FROM THE OWL SILHOUETTE INSIDE OF THE SHELL!  DO YOU SEE THE OWL?  I ENJOY POINTING OUT THE OWL TO KIDS AT THE BEACH & HOPE TO GIVE SOMEONE A LIFELONG INTEREST IN NATURE BY DOING THIS.

WAVY TURBAN SHELLS ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITES.  THEIR SIZE RANGES FROM SMALL TO A GIANT 6 INCHES ACROSS.  WHEN THEIR OUTER LAYER RUBS OFF BY THE SEA, THEY BECOME “PEARLIZED”.  THE STRUCTURE OF THIS WAVY SHELL SORT OF LOOKS LIKE OCEAN WAVES.

Seashell mini watercolors 5-27-2014 - 3 WATERMARKSEA URCHIN SHELL BITS ARE VERY, VERY TINY & HARD TO FIND.  SEA URCHIN SHELLS ARE FRAGILE & THE OCEAN WAVES BREAK THEM DOWN VERY QUICKLY.  I LIKE TO IMAGINE THAT SAND, WHICH IS MADE OF GROUND DOWN ROCKS, QUARTZ & SEA SHELLS, CONTAINS THESE LOVELY BITS.

PAINTING SEA SHELLS GIVES ME MORE PLEASURE NOW THEN PICKING UP THE SHELLS. THESE WATERCOLORS ARE APPROXIMATELY 2 INCHES X 2 INCHES OR 2 INCHES X 4 INCHES ON ARCHES HOT PRESS WATERCOLOR PAPER.
