Harbor Seal Pup Defends Self From a Mean Ole’ Sea Gull

As if the two month old and weaned Harbor seal pups don’t have enough on their minds, they still have to watch out for the pesky sea gulls who still seem to like trying to nip a pup’s tail.  First the nip, then the pup turns around and says “Cut it out!”.  Then the pup turns and a face to face stand off takes place until the gull finally walks off to find something else to do.  Check out the pups face because they are molting now and this is a great shot of a face half molted and half furry!

POLKA-DOTTED SEA GULL CHICKS – LA JOLLA

SEA GULL CHICKS ARE HATCHING EVERYWHERE IN LA JOLLA!  It’s that time of the year again when the sea gull eggs are hatching & polka-dotted little sea gull chicks have arrived!  They gaze at the ocean & test their little wings.  They can’t wait to fly!

RING BILLED SEA GULL & EL NINO RAIN IN SAN DIEGO

I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH RING BILLED SEA GULLS!  The band around their bill, their red-rimmed eyes, but oh! the polka-dotted tail feathers!  When I researched this gull I discovered that in the late 19th century humans hunted them for their feathers.  Fortunately the population has rebounded.  Currently I’m seeing them all over La Jolla & Pacific Beach.  Today it is pouring rain, but yesterday we could see the El Nino rain storm arriving off shore.  The sun peeking through turned the La Jolla sea aqua & the clouds on the horizon were indigo blue!  How can I stand to stay inside with such beauty out my front door!
