SAN DIEGO AUTUMN PERSIMMONS AT THE FARMER’S MARKETS

SAN DIEGO AUTUMN FILLS THE LA JOLLA FARMER’S MARKET WITH LOVELY ORANGE PERSIMMONS.  Persimmons have a Calyx top, which can be removed & left to dry.  The dried calyx look like lovely “wooden” flowers.  Persimmons sliced up & put into a spinach salad with dried cranberries make a lovely Autumn salad.  In Japan, persimmons are a well-known Autumn subject for paintings.  The two Japanese brush paintings here are painted by me.  Persimmons an ode to Autumn:

The village so old

there’s not a single house

without a persimmon tree.

SAN DIEGO AUTUMN APPLES FROM JULIAN.

SAN DIEGO AUTUMN – THE LITTLE TOWN OF JULIAN HAS APPLE PICKING & THEY ARE WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR FRESH APPLE PIES.  I go to the La Jolla Farmer’s Market & bring home a market basket of crisp & crunchy apples.  I think of apple recipes.  A curry chicken & apple salad, a simple apple tart baking in the oven.  Or maybe baked apples with a dollop of vanilla yogurt on the top will hit the spot.  Apples & cinnamon.  It’s a San Diego fall !

CARROT WOOD TREE SEED PODS litter my driveway everyday now.  I love the cute little seed caps with their bright red-orange berries.  I always want to do something creative with these seed pods, but I think this year I’m going to put some of the pods in a pretty jar.  The wild green parrots here in San Diego love to eat these berries so right now the parrots are feasting!
