SAN DIEGO AUTUMN PERSIMMONS AT THE FARMER’S MARKETS

SAN DIEGO AUTUMN FILLS THE LA JOLLA FARMER’S MARKET WITH LOVELY ORANGE PERSIMMONS.  Persimmons have a Calyx top, which can be removed & left to dry.  The dried calyx look like lovely “wooden” flowers.  Persimmons sliced up & put into a spinach salad with dried cranberries make a lovely Autumn salad.  In Japan, persimmons are a well-known Autumn subject for paintings.  The two Japanese brush paintings here are painted by me.  Persimmons an ode to Autumn:

The village so old

there’s not a single house

without a persimmon tree.

2014 ART JOURNAL – DRIED PERSIMMONS & AUTUMN COLORS WITH JAPANESE TRINKETS & TREASURES

November 2014 Art Journal - Page 134 WATERMARKAUTUMN IS COMING TO A CLOSE SO I GLORY IN THE COLOR PALETTE OF FALL.  At the La Jolla Farmer’s market there are bouquets of Marigolds, mini pumpkins on branches &  a few sunflowers.  The market florist has made up cornucopia baskets with autumn leaves & bunches of red chili peppers.  It is persimmon season in San Diego & there are baskets of orange fruit everywhere.  One vendor has cellophane bags of dried persimmons & they are so pretty.  I buy myself a Pink Lady apple that is crisp & fragrant.  It is apple picking season in the San Diego mountains.  At the thrift store I find a number of vintage Japanese trinkets & treasures – some paper party favors, a metal butterfly pin &  a wonderful celluloid Japanese charm necklace!  All for under $10.  Autumn fun.
