BUTTERFLY BOOKS TO CELEBRATE SPRING!

BUTTERFLY BOOKS STITCHED & READY TO FLY INTO YOUR HANDS TO CELEBRATE SPRING!  A page from my Handmade Books Art Journal shows details of how to make these little books.  I used watercolor paper for the front & back of the butterfly & hand painted them.  Each butterfly book has different kinds of paper “pages”.  The yellow butterfly has gelli paper printed with metallic ink pages.  The orange Monarch butterfly has pages created from a coastal California map where this butterfly migrates.  The blue butterfly pages are made of colored tissue paper & tulle netting.  Using a cereal box, I made a cardboard template of the butterfly to cut them out, but each butterfly is handpainted!  Hope you are inspired to make your own Spring butterfly books!

California Buckwheat, Mustard & Prickly Pear Cactus – Del Mar

I’m still stopping by the roadsides & travelling around town to enjoy all the wild flowers blooming in San Diego after our wonderful rainy season this year that ended a 10-year drought.  These photos are of the Los Penasquitos March Nature Preserve & Lagoon between Del Mar and Torrey Pines State Reserve and State Beach.  I was on the hunt today for wild California Buckwheat, which is a major source of nectar for butterflies & honey bees.  The white flowers with a hint of pink clump together on top of woody stems with deep green leaves.  Really lovely.  While I was photographing the bees were buzzing!  Of course there was more wild Mustard growing there and I was surprised to find tons of Prickly Pear Cactus there, too.  Torrey Pines State Reserve is to the south and La Jolla appears in the distant landscape.  Torrey Pines State Beach is a wonderful place to drive by early in the morning and see the Inshore Dolphins surfing the glassy waves.  Really it is such magical world and I am so lucky.

MATILIJA POPPIES – FLOWERS TO DREAM ABOUT

MATILIJA POPPIES – Like a lovely painting that haunts my dreams.  I stop & gaze at them letting the world go by not a thought in my head, but how lovely this life really is.

These poppies are blooming on a large bush in Pacific Beach.  They are covered in bees drinking up all the yellow pollen!
