TANGERINE SEASON – SAN DIEGO

Tangerines in basket 12-2014 WATERMARKLA JOLLA FARMER’S MARKET had big baskets of tangerines this Sunday.  I love how San Diego’s winter is the citrus season & the market is loaded with oranges & tangerines of all types.  I grew up where a tangerine in Winter was a luxury & finding one in the bottom of my Christmas stocking was a real pleasure.  The perfume of a tangerine lets me know that sweet taste is waiting to be released by peeling the skin & taking a bite!

2014 ART JOURNAL – DRIED PERSIMMONS & AUTUMN COLORS WITH JAPANESE TRINKETS & TREASURES

November 2014 Art Journal - Page 134 WATERMARKAUTUMN IS COMING TO A CLOSE SO I GLORY IN THE COLOR PALETTE OF FALL.  At the La Jolla Farmer’s market there are bouquets of Marigolds, mini pumpkins on branches &  a few sunflowers.  The market florist has made up cornucopia baskets with autumn leaves & bunches of red chili peppers.  It is persimmon season in San Diego & there are baskets of orange fruit everywhere.  One vendor has cellophane bags of dried persimmons & they are so pretty.  I buy myself a Pink Lady apple that is crisp & fragrant.  It is apple picking season in the San Diego mountains.  At the thrift store I find a number of vintage Japanese trinkets & treasures – some paper party favors, a metal butterfly pin &  a wonderful celluloid Japanese charm necklace!  All for under $10.  Autumn fun.

ORCHIDS, GARGOYLES & ELEPHANTS – OH MY! ART JOURNAL 2014

September 2014 Art Journal - Page 109 WATERMARK

FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2014 – ILLUSTRATED ART JOURNAL – This week on the coast was a very hot & humid week due to a tropical storm down in Mexico.  Beastie Cat slept in the shade upside down all day trying to escape the heat.  I spent the week hibernating in front of the portable air conditioner & creating mini Asian screen cards with watercolor art & rubber stamps.  At my Chinese brush painting workshop, we painted lovely orchids.  I made card board butterfly templates for a future art project & painted watercolors of hot peppers & squash from the La Jolla Farmer’s market.  On my trip to the art supply store for watercolor paper, I ventured outside for a few minutes & took photos of lion gargoyles in front of an old building and an elephant mural painted on a cafe wall.  Art is everywhere for an artist by-the-sea!
