2014 ART JOURNAL – DRIED PERSIMMONS & AUTUMN COLORS WITH JAPANESE TRINKETS & TREASURES

November 2014 Art Journal - Page 134 WATERMARKAUTUMN IS COMING TO A CLOSE SO I GLORY IN THE COLOR PALETTE OF FALL.  At the La Jolla Farmer’s market there are bouquets of Marigolds, mini pumpkins on branches &  a few sunflowers.  The market florist has made up cornucopia baskets with autumn leaves & bunches of red chili peppers.  It is persimmon season in San Diego & there are baskets of orange fruit everywhere.  One vendor has cellophane bags of dried persimmons & they are so pretty.  I buy myself a Pink Lady apple that is crisp & fragrant.  It is apple picking season in the San Diego mountains.  At the thrift store I find a number of vintage Japanese trinkets & treasures – some paper party favors, a metal butterfly pin &  a wonderful celluloid Japanese charm necklace!  All for under $10.  Autumn fun.

SEASIDE FLEA MARKET BY-THE-SEA

June 2014 Art Journal - Page 71 WATERMARK

2014 ART JOURNAL WATERCOLOR PAGE – JUNE

A charming little shop called Vignettes in Ocean Beach had a French Seaside Flea Market.

I enjoyed seeing was all the colorful India umbrellas with colorful  pennant flags blowing in the ocean breeze.

“By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea,
You and I, you and I, oh! how happy we’ll be.”

There were sea shells, vintage Japanese glass fishing floats & handmade signs announcing we live by-the-sea for our front doors.  Couches with seahorse pillows sprinkled with starfish garlands set the mood for a seascape color scheme.

I loved the colors of these ribbon brooches.  I might put them on my favorite beach hat or wear them on a blouse when I’m having a happy day.

My real find today was a sea shell with gold trim, which I tied with a silk ribbon to my turquoise bead necklace.  I also found this Mexican Pelican bead in a basket of trinkets for $2 each.  I tied an orange ribbon on it & added it to my Trinkets & Treasures dish on my shrine table.  I think it adds just the right touch.

Later on in the week I received this Mexican embroidered mermaid bag as a gift.  it contains naturally harvested sea salt from Mexico & the proceeds of this purchase go to support the families of the woman who embroider the bag.

As I’m writing this, I’m thinking about a sea song that I love to hear.  it’s kind of old.  Frank Sinatra used to sing it.  I hope you know the tune and can sing along.

Somewhere beyond the sea

somewhere waiting for me

my lover stands on golden sands
and watches the ships that go sailin’

Somewhere beyond the sea
she’s there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
then straight to her arms
I’d go sailin’

It’s far beyond the stars
it’s near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
my heart will lead me there soon

We’ll meet beyond the shore
we’ll kiss just like before
Happy we’ll feel beyond the sea
and never again I’ll go sailin’

I know beyond a doubt
my heart will lead me there soon
We’ll meet (I know we’ll meet) beyond the shore
We’ll kiss just like before
Happy we’ll be beyond the sea
and never again I’ll go sailin’

no more sailin’
so long sailin’
bye bye sailin’…
move on out captain
