Today the California Coastal Commission voted to close the beach to all human access during the pupping season (December 15 to May 15) for the next 5 years, which will protect the pregnant seals before and during birthing & the newborn and nursing pups. Thanks to the City of San Diego for voting to protect the harbor seals!
A very Happy Day for the seals! This photo shows a harbor seal mother bonding with her newborn, which is only a few minutes old.
iT’S PUPPING SEASON! From now until May 15th, there will be little harbor seal water sprite pups swimming, nursing and touching noses with moms. Visitors will get to observe the miracle of these pups being born on the beach. This darling pup was named Gidget and was one of the first pups born this season. In these photos Gidget is 3 days old and already swims like a little seal mermaid. If you look close at one of the photos, you will see her umbilical cord still attached because she is such a new born. Mom was sleeping in the water for awhile. It seems even seal mothers get tired from trying to keep up with energetic babies!
