HANDMADE BOOK OF CALIFORNIA BROWN PELICANS – Using my pelican photographs & watercolor pelican illustrations, I created this handmade book. A glimpse into the beauty & magic of these ancient, sacred birds.
AUTUMN IN SAN DIEGO – EL NINO ARRIVES BRINGING MUCH-NEEDED RAIN & THE HARBOR SEAL COLONY RETURNS. Pelicans huddle together on the bluff while high-tide waves crash & boom. Harbor seals snooze tiredly on the beach after long swims for fish. A pelican bathes at the edge of the sea. Storm clouds filling the sky make a stunning ray-filled light at sunset with pink puffy clouds silhouettes of palm trees in the east. There’s a definite chill in the air with 68 degrees in this San Diego Autumn by-the-sea.
Lately I’ve been doing practice paintings of California Brown Pelicans in their Winter plumage, which is just so glorious.
Looking back at the photos I’ve taken, I was struck that the ones where they are being their natural selves in a huge squadron of pelicans really convey the remarkable character of these wonderful birds. Pelicans were endangered in California not too long ago & this breeding season, they seem to be struggling again.
I love how they open their mouths & flex their pouches. The colors are wondrous. Visitors from all over the world come to La Jolla Cove & marvel at them.
The California Brown Pelicans have been arriving here at the La Jolla Cove in squadrons for years. i think these birds really should be a national treasure. I really have no words to say how heartbroken I am that the City of San Diego seems intent on driving the pelicans out of the La Jolla Cove area. I love these birds. If you could take the time to send an email to Mayor Kevin Faulconer telling how these birds need to be protected at the La Jolla Cove, perhaps it would make a difference. The Pelicans need our voices.
