HARBOR SEAL PUP GOES FOR A SWIM & A RIDE ON MOM’S BACK!

One of the newest Harbor seal pups was being annoyed by a sea gull who thought pecking the pup’s tail might somehow be a meal.  The Harbor seal mom chased the gull away several times & then decided it was time to take her pup for a swim.  The pesky gull followed the pup right to the edge of the water.  The pup climbed onto mom’s back & off they swam!

HARBOR SEALS PUPPING SEASON 2016 – A PLAYFUL LITTLE PUP!

HARBOR SEAL PUPPING SEASON IN LA JOLLA, SAN DIEGO IS IN FULL SWING NOW!  The Harbor seal colony has 15 healthy, thriving & playful pups as of yesterday.  All are bonded with attentive moms & are delightful to watch.  There are more pregnant seals arriving everyday, too!  Here’s a few photos of a pup enjoying seal life on an eel-grass covered reef at low tide.  Mom is so patient.  The pup nurses enthusiastically!  The tide starts to come in, the seals raise their tails & heads to stay dry.  The pups are on their way to being a member of the La Jolla Harbor seal colony.  It is a delight and a privilege to be able to observe them.

KING TIDE & THE LA JOLLA HARBOR SEALS

KING TIDES & THE LA JOLLA HARBOR SEALS – This morning at 8 a.m. a King Tide of 8 feet caused giant waves to crash over the sea wall in La Jolla.  140 Harbor Seals moved far up onto the beach to take shelter & rest.  A Snowy Egret foraged on the beach along with a beautiful Whimbrel.  Seals continued to arrive.  One seal stopped to yawn on her way to a nap.  Pupping season for the Harbor seals is a month away & there are quite a few pregnant seals really needing to rest.  The awesome power of the sea was spectacular.
